CHARLOTTE – Week 10 of the CIAA football season is in the books. With the championship game participants already decided, most schools were playing for bragging rights in the final week of the regular season, which has unofficially become known as ‘Rivalry Week’ across the conference.

Let’s look at how teams across the conference fared to close out the regular season and build momentum heading into next year: 

Saint Augustine’s 21, Shaw 17

Saint Augustine’s pulled off a 21-17 upset win against crosstown rival Shaw in the Raleigh Classic to secure their first win of the season. The SAU defense made two stops on the Shaw’s final two drives and also got a pair of unconventional touchdowns, a blocked punt recovered in the end zone by Tiaseer Rambert and an 18-yard fumble return by Marcus Davis, to help take down the Bears. Falcons quarterback Chris Perkins, who had a game-high 98 yards passing and led SAU with 64 yards rushing, also threw a 21-yard scoring pass to Anthony Archie. Despite the loss, Shaw ran for 186 yards as a team that included a game-high 138 yards and a score from Sidney Gibbs on 27 carries. Andre Brandon also added 56 yards on 14 carries and a score. Defensively, Shaw’s Devon Hunt finished with a team-high eight tackles, including two for loss, and a sack while SAU defenders Demetrius Johnson and Joseph Harris led all tacklers with nine stops each.

Chowan 28, Lincoln (PA) 12

Chowan defeated Lincoln (PA), 28-12, to finish with their best record since 1983 and totaling their most wins in a season during the NCAA era. CU playmaker Imeek Watkins scored three touchdowns, including a 50-yard punt return, and caught 12 balls for a game-high 150 yards. Bryce Witt closed out his storied career with 275 yards on 30 completions that included a pair of touchdowns passes to Watkins. Lincoln got a pair of field goals from Sam Okezie-Imo (29, 32 yards) along with a 10-yard scoring pass from Isaiah Wilson to Michael Credle, who led the Lions with 90 yards on five catches, to highlight their scoring for the game. Gilbert Ortiz led CU on defense with a game-high 10 tackles, including one for loss, and three QB hurries. Lincoln’s Roosevelt Jordan led the team with seven tackles.

#14 Bowie State 79, Elizabeth City State 6


Chowa!No. 14 Bowie State made a statement heading into next week’s championship with a 79-6 win over Elizabeth City State on senior day. The Bulldogs rushed for a program-record 422 yards with eight touchdowns on the ground, led by Calil Wilkins with 137 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns. Led by five tackles from Myles Wolfolk, the BSU defense held ECSU to 82 yards of total offense that included minus-11 yards rushing. A four-yard scoring run by Carleton Thomas, who had a team-high 10 yards rushing, produced the Vikings only points of the game. Juanya’ Majette and Zaire Edwards led ECSU with a game-high eight tackles apiece.

Virginia Union 20, Virginia State 13

Virginia Union closed out their season on a positive note with a 20-13 win over in-state rival Virginia State in a game that was broadcast nationally on AspireTV. Down 13-5 entering the fourth quarter, the Panthers got a pair of scoring runs from Jada Byers (five and one yards), who rushed for a game-high 112 yards on 21 carries. VUU also got 97 yards rushing courtesy Rodney McKay while receiver Charles Hall finished with a game-high 96 yards receiving on seven catches. D’Vonte Waller and Chauncey Caldwell each threw a touchdown for Virginia State with backfield mate Darius Hagans rushing for a team-high 83 yards on 20 carries. VUU’s Domontay Rhem had a game-high 11 tackles, including two and a half for loss, while Zion Johnson led the Trojans with nine tackles.

Fayetteville State 10, Winston-Salem State 3

Fayetteville State held on to defeat rival Winston-Salem State,10-3, on senior day, remaining undefeated in conference play heading into next week’s CIAA title game. In a game that was defensive battle, a 46-yard touchdown pass from K’hari Lane to Braxton Knotts followed by a 19-yard field goal from Elton Andrew in the second quarter proved to be just enough scoring for the Broncos to secure the victory. Lane completed 14 of 21 passes for a game-high 187 yards while teammate Donshel Jetton led all rushers with 93 yards on 19 carries. Cameron Lewis led WSSU offensively with 84 yards passing and 35 yards rushing, both team-highs, and Ivan Caro delivered the Rams only points of the game with a 22-yard field goal. WSSU’s Deiontae Jones led all tacklers with 15 stops while teammate Ta’shaun Taylor registered 10 tackles, including three stops behind the line of scrimmage. Kenneth Merritt led the Broncos with seven tackles on the game.
